AbstractThe high productivity reached by forestry plantations makes that the intensive handling assume increasingly importance in the supply of wood for industrial and power generation. According to the Forestry Institute from São Paulo state (IF/SP), the region of the Vale do Paraíba, located to the southeast of Brazil, has shown a growth in the occupation of areas for forestry, mainly of Eucalyptus monoculture, that has a great social and economical value. According to Lima (2008), about 20 years ago, the Vale do Paraíba has been taken by Eucalyptus plantations. Analyzing some satellite images, it was found that the city of Caçapava, state of São Paulo, belonging to cities of the Vale do Paraíba which has been expanding the growth area of Eucalyptus. The Remote Sensing is a tool that allows an immediate analysis and even the avaliation of a large area of forest cover, find the importance of this tool for monitoring areas of Eucalyptus, once this type of forest has a dinamism very fast. In this context, the objective is to identify plantations areas of this kind on the city aforesaid, using satellite images of 1989 with a spatial resolution of 30 meters from TM sensor, aboard the Landsat-5, through different processes.
